Climate 2016: Carbon dioxide increased to the highest observed rate, sea ice extent was 2nd lowest on record

- jsFiddle demo

In 2016, the annual increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration, measured as parts per million per year, was the highest rate since recording began in 1959.  The above chart plots data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.  The dots represent the annual mean growth in atmospheric CO2 and the shaded area represents 1 standard deviation.  Also, note that all data points compare Dec to Dec of the previous year, except 2016 where, due to data unavailability, Oct was compared to the previous Oct.

Sea Ice

Arctic Sea ice extent was at a near all-time low in 2016.  Using data from the National Sea Ice Data Center, the below time-lapse video shows Arctic Sea ice extent from 1979 to 2016.  In viewing the images, one will see that 2016 had the second-lowest sea ice extent on satellite record.
