Arctic Sea ice extent was at a near all-time low in 2016. Using data from the National Sea Ice Data Center, the below time-lapse video shows Arctic Sea ice extent from 1979 to 2016. In viewing the images, one will see that 2016 had the second-lowest sea ice extent on satellite record.
